Fans react to amazing new Stamford Bridge designs

first_img Stamford Bridge in 1992 1 PLEASE NOTE: THE NEW STAMFORD BRIDGE DESIGN DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THE PICTURE ABOVE! (TAKEN IN 1992). NO CONCRETE BENCHES OR SPACES TO PARK CARS BEHIND THE GOAL ARE INCLUDED IN THE NEW DESIGN. SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE ‘NEW STAMFORD BRIDGE’.Chelsea have submitted a planning application to rebuild Stamford Bridge into a 60,000-seat stadium and the images released by the club show a design that is unique to say the least.Contrary to popular mockery, Chelsea were formed way back in 1905, to help fill Stamford Bridge on a regular basis, with the ground having been redeveloped into a huge sporting arena after originally opening in 1877.A giant concrete bowl back then, by the early 1990s it was an outdated ground (see the picture above) and was subsequently redeveloped substantially until it reached its present state, with a capacity of 41,600.Now Roman Abramovich has plans to give the Bridge another dramatic makeover. Here’s a selection of the reaction to the designs…last_img read more

Coppola tells filmgoers: Be patient with `Youth’

first_img“I was astonished because it wasn’t true, and I have nothing but respect and admiration” for Pacino, De Niro and Nicholson, Coppola said. “These are the three greatest actors in the world today and they are my friends. So I have nothing but affection for them.” It is Francis Ford Coppola’s first movie in a decade, and the Oscar-winning director said Saturday that audiences should be in no hurry before deciding if “Youth Without Youth” is good or bad. “Youth Without Youth” is Coppola’s first movie since “The Rainmaker” in 1997. It had its public premiere Saturday night at the Rome Film Festival. At an earlier screening for the press, reactions were mixed, and Coppola asked people to see it more than once. “When you venture into new territories … you know that it’s different than `Spider-Man’ or `Shrek’ or other films that are immediately met with success. So part of being an artist who wants to look at new areas (is knowing that) it will take awhile for people to be familiar with the film. I only ask you to think that my film was interesting.” Also Saturday, Coppola said his comments in the November issue of GQ magazine were taken out of context. He was quoted as saying Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson have become apathetic and lost their passion for taking on good roles. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. MALIBU – A gravel truck plowed through a red light Wednesday and struck two cars, killing two people and injuring an off-duty Los Angeles County firefighter, authorities said. The big-rig was traveling on Kanan Dume Road, which is normally off-limits to trucks, when the driver apparently lost control on a downhill grade and tore through the red light at Pacific Coast Highway at about 70 mph, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Philip Brooks said. The truck hit a Mercedes and instantly killed its driver, then struck a sport utility vehicle driven by the firefighter. The truck then slammed into a hillside, killing the driver. The identities of the victims were not immediately released. Gregory Hill said. The firefighter’s ankle was broken and he was trapped in his car until he was pulled free, Brooks said. He was taken to a hospital. Brooks said many truck drivers have been using Kanan Dume in the past several days because their normal route was closed due to fire. The Canyon Fire destroyed six homes, two businesses and a church, blackened 4,500 acres and injured four people. At the time of the crash, around 10 a.m., the fire was 85 percent contained and Pacific Coast Highway had been reopened for only a short time. Authorities opened the route at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, just after Los Angeles County Fire officials said the Canyon Fire was fully contained.last_img read more

Ian Ayre to step down as Liverpool chief executive in 2017

first_imgLiverpool chief executive Ian Ayre is to leave his position at the end of next season. The 52-year-old has been in his current role since 2013, having previously been managing director and commercial director in a nine-year spell at Anfield, but has decided to step down at the end of his contract in May 2017.Ayre has often been seen as a divisive figure among fans, often bearing the brunt of criticism from those who did not see him as having the necessary experience to run a club of Liverpool’s stature, while he was also the target of much of the supporters’ anger during the recent ticket price protests. However, owners Fenway Sports Group has been a staunch supporter of the man who helped pave the way for its buyout back in 2010 after voting against then owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett in a boardroom battle for the future of the club. He then helped bring much-needed stability. In fact, FSG tried to persuade him to reverse his decision without success.“Ian advised us of his intention to step down as CEO a few months ago,” said a joint statement from FSG principal owner John W Henry, chairman, Tom Werner and president Mike Gordon.“We asked him on several occasions to take some time to reconsider his decision but have been unable to convince him to remain as CEO beyond May of 2017.“We will at some point in the near future begin identifying and recruiting a worthy successor to continue to build on the outstanding foundations which have been laid by Ian.“Under his leadership we have seen Liverpool transform from a club that was on the brink of bankruptcy to one which today enjoys strong financial and operational health.“Stability is a commodity often under-valued in sporting organisations but it has been a fundamental hallmark of Ian’s time in charge.“Liverpool will reap the benefits of his outstanding work for many years to come.” Ian Ayre has been at the club since 2007 1last_img read more
