NFL To Big Ben: Make it Work

first_imgLONDON — The NFL would only put a full-time franchise in London if all operational issues are worked out and the league is sure the team would be competitive, a league executive said Thursday.Mark Waller, executive vice president of the NFL’s international division, said there is no time frame for possibly placing a team in London, adding that a decision will come “when we’re ready.”The NFL has played 11 regular-season games in London since 2007. Wembley Stadium will host three more games this season, starting with the Miami Dolphins against the New York Jets on Oct. 4.The NFL recently announced a 10-year deal to play at least two games each season at Premier League club Tottenham’s new stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2018.The Jacksonville Jaguars have a four-season deal, which expires in 2016, to play at least one home game per season at Wembley.NFL officials have said for years that they envisage having a franchise in London one day, though many issues still need to be resolved and the league wants to be sure an overseas team would be profitable.“The key for us is that we’ve got to build real certainty that any team that was to make that undertaking could truly be competitive,” Waller said in a conference call. “The last thing we would ever want to do is to put a franchise in a place where the logistics, the travel, the sourcing of players, the infrastructure for supporting teams through a season doesn’t exist.”The games at Wembley have been sellouts and the NFL has built up a solid fan base in the U.K., where soccer, rugby and cricket are still the most popular sports. London Mayor Boris Johnson is among those pushing for a full-time team in the capital.“We feel very comfortable from a fan perspective, from a sponsor and a stadium perspective now, that we have all of the right things in place,” Waller said. “The one thing that we’ve got to do more work on is how would it work from a team operational standpoint?”For the first time, the NFL is holding games on back-to-back weekends in London this season — the Jaguars against the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 25, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs against the Detroit Lions on Nov. 1. Wembley is also hosting its first division rivalry game, the AFC East contest between the Dolphins and Jets.“We need to make sure that the concept, actually when you bring it into practice, the teams can still be competitive,” Waller said. “There’s no real way to prove that out other than testing it. …. Now we’ve got to be able to prove that and ensure to owners that we feel a team there could be competitive.”Asked whether the NFL might add a fourth contest in London in the future, Waller said the league is exploring expanding to “other markets,” singling out Mexico and Germany as possible sites for games.Waller said the NFL would also explore the idea of holding eight games overseas, not necessarily all in London.“We will look at that as an alternative to potentially putting a franchise there,” he said. “It definitely is an idea that has merit. It clearly is one that we haven’t really started to focus on. So there’s a lot of work to be done.”STEPHEN WILSON, AP Sports WilsonTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

The San Diego City Council and Board of Port Commissioners authorized the original three-party purchase agreement in June.“With thousands living without shelter and tens of thousands whose jobs depend on attracting convention business, the need for action on these urgent issues isn’t going away,” said Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer. “Unlike some City Councilmembers whose idea of solving a crisis is to hold yet another committee meeting, the Port and Fifth Avenue Landing have shown they are willing to step up for the greater good of our community. Even though an initiative to fund the expansion and help the homeless won’t be on the November ballot, it is still on the table for a future election, and I thank Fifth Avenue Landing and the Port for their continued partnership on this very important issue.”The San Diego County Registrar of Voters is expected to determine by Sept. 20 if an initiative to fund the convention center expansion, homelessness solutions and road repairs will qualify for a future ballot. Webster Donation Puts JSC Mission Control Restoration Into Hyperdrive

first_img 00:00 /01:13 Space Center HoustonSpace Center Houston hopes to restore Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center to exactly as it looked during the Apollo years. The $3.5 million donation will be funded by the hotel occupancy tax. Hotels expect the control room restoration will attract more overnight stays from visitors to the area. William Harris is president and CEO of the non-profit Space Center Houston.“Currently it’s one of our most popular stops on the behind-the-scenes tram tour of Johnson Space Center, and you can go into the visitation area and we do an orientation so people can see the actual room through the glass, exactly.” The control room on the floor below continues to be used for the International Space Station. Space Center Houston is raising $5 million for the renovation to the second floor control center, which was declared a National Historic Landmark and taken out of operation in 1995.“Our goal is to restore it to the Apollo era. So, restore the consoles, illuminate them, add other artifacts, so it looks like a working space as it did, you know, forty, fifty years ago.” Curators can look at old pictures and film to see how the control room once looked, and retired control center employees are helping to convey what the environment was like. The Space Center hopes to complete restoration by 2019, in time for the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. KMDA to set up foot overbridges to smoothen traffic

first_imgKolkata: Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has decided to set up a few foot overbridges on Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani and Eastern Metropolitan Bypass for faster movement of traffic and safety of the pedestrians. An underpass and a pedestrian footbridge will come up at Ruby intersection. Because of heavy traffic crossing the stretch on EM Bypass near Ruby, commutation has become a nightmare for the pedestrians. Because of offices, the concentration of people surrounding Ruby is fast increasing. The underpass will come up on the Mukundapur side while the foot overbridge will be constructed near the station of Garia-Airport Metro route. Experts suggested that there will be a huge concentration of people along EM Bypass and unless steps are not taken now, it will difficult to manage traffic and pedestrian movement in a few years’ time. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeFoot overbridges will also come up at the intersection of Ajaynagar and Patuli. Both these areas are accident prone as pedestrians find it difficult to cross EM Bypass. The pedestrian flyover will create an uninterrupted flow of traffic along the stretch. Foot overbridge will also come up at Dum Dum Park crossing. Once these foot overbridges come up, the time taken to travel to Kolkata Airport from Garia will lessen. Also, they will minimise the number of road accidents.last_img read more

How to create your own R package with RStudio Tutorial

first_imgIn this tutorial, we will look at the process of creating your own R package. If you are going to create code and put it into production, it’s always a good idea to create a package with version control, examples, and other features. Plus, with RStudio, it is easy to do. So, we will use a simple example with one small function to show how easy it is. This tutorial is an excerpt taken from the book Mastering Machine Learning with R – Third Edition written by Cory Lesmeister. The book explores expert techniques for solving data analytics and covers machine learning challenges that can help you gain insights from complex projects and power up your applications. Before getting started, you will need to load two packages: > install.packages(“roxygen2”)> install.packages(“devtools”) You now want to open File in RStudio and select New Project, which will put you at this point: Select a new directory as desired, and specify R Package, as shown in the following screenshot: You will now name your package – I’ve innovatively called this one package – and select Create Project: Go to your Files tab in RStudio and you should see several files populated like this: Notice the folder called R. That is where we will put the R functions for our package. But first, click on Description and fill it out accordingly, and save it. Here is my version, which will be a function to code all missing values in a dataframe to zero: I’ve left imports and suggests blank. This is where you would load other packages, such as tidyverse or caret. Now, open up the hello.R function in the R folder, and delete all of it. The following format will work nicely: Title: Your package title of course Description: A brief description Param: The parameters for that function; the arguments Return: The values returned Examples: Provide any examples of how to use the function Export: Here, write the function you desire Here is the function for our purposes, which just turns all NAs to zero: You will now go to Build – Configure Build Tools and you should end up here: Click the checkmark for Generate documentation with Roxygen. Doing so will create this popup, which you can close and hit OK. You probably want to rename your function now from hello.R to something relevant. Now comes the moment of truth to build your package. Do this by clicking Build – Clean and Rebuild. Now you can search for your package, and it should appear: Click on it and go through the documentation: There you have it, a useless package, but think of what you can do by packaging your own or your favorite functions, and anyone who inherits your code will thank you. In this tutorial, we went through the process of creating an R package, which can help you and your team put your code into production. We created one user-defined function for our package, but your only limit is your imagination. I hope you’ve enjoyed it and can implement the methods in here, as well as other methods you learn over time. If you want to learn other concepts of Machine Learning with R, be sure to check out the book Mastering Machine Learning with R – Third Edition.
