Pokes in the NFL Week 1: Joe Randle Stars in Lead Role

first_imgJustin Gilbert, CBCleveland BrownsDNP Football is well underway now with college and the NFL both in full swing. Joe Randle and Dan Bailey did their thing in Dallas’ last-second win over the New York Giants. Russell Okung did not do his thing against the St. Louis Rams. Here’s a recap of Pokes in the NFL Week 1.Pokes on the PokesOdell Beckham Jr., who?Joseph Randle made this nasty one-handed grab in the Dallas Cowboys’ matchup with New York on Sunday night football. The catch highlighted Randle’s first game as the lead running back for the Cowboys. Randle finished the day with 107 total yards (42 receiving, 65 rushing) as Dallas won in thrilling fashion, 27-26.His performance caught the attention of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.I see you @JRAN_1 showing off your great hands. Great job. Keep it up @SNFonNBC @dallascowboys— Mike Gundy (@CoachGundy) September 14, 2015But Randle wasn’t the only former OSU player to make an impact for Dallas Sunday night. Dan Bailey hits field goals with such accuracy, he could probably do it in his sleep.https://twitter.com/brendon_wm/status/643268564258959360On Sunday, things were no different. Bailey nailed both of his field goal attempts and all three of his PAT attempts, despite the new NFL rule, which moved the PAT back to the 15-yard line, making extra point attempts 33 yards. But, after an unfortunate headshot, Bailey was victim to jokes on social media.Even with his eyes closed, Bailey was able to hit the game-winning PAT for Dallas after an incredible drive led by Tony Romo.Dez Bryant was having a solid game for the Cowboys when he left. Bryant finished with five catches for 48 yards in the Dallas win. But bad news came after the game that Bryant will be out for 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. After posting 88 receptions, 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, Bryant will leave a big hole in Dallas’ passing game. But even hobbled, he found a way to celebrate the Cowboys’ win.Dez Bryant suffers broken foot, still finds way to celebrate Cowboys’ win: http://t.co/hm585bO2T4 pic.twitter.com/ZDgPLbGOAT— NFLonCBS (@NFLonCBS) September 14, 2015Tyler Patmon also contributed to the Cowboys on both defense and special teams. Wilson was sacked six times for a total loss of 32 yards. Former Cowboy Russell Okung plays tackle for the Seahawks and was quick to take blame for the poor protection on Wilson.#Seahawks LT Russell Okung: “I just have to play better. I’ve got to protect the quarterback better. That’s unacceptable.”— Danny O’Neil (@dannyoneil) September 13, 2015In addition to Cox, number of former Cowboys found new homes this offseason.Antonio Smith (Broncos), Ryan Robinson (Seahawks) and Kevin Williams (Saints) all are on new teams this year. In week one, only Williams and Smith played. Williams finished with one tackle against Arizona, while Smith had two versus Baltimore. There’s both Kevin Williams and John Jenkins stuffing Ellington right at the point of attack. #Saints will need plenty of that this year.— David Billiot Jr (@DCBilliotJr) September 13, 2015Here’s a list of the rest of the Pokes in the pros. India factor missing from Bangladesh polls campaign Indian Express

first_imgThe India factor — which has been part of the pre-election rhetoric in the past — is missing from electioneering in Bangladesh, said The Indian Express on Friday.According to the Indian media outlet, in the previous polls, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail in a corruption case, would accuse the ruling Awami League, led by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, of being “pro-India”“It’s very interesting to see that India did not get mentioned at all by the two prominent political parties during their election campaign,” an Indian diplomat in Dhaka was quoted to have said in the report. It added that none of the leaders from either the BNP or Awami League churned up anti-India sentiments during the campaign.“I think they realised that the BNP was not benefitting by alienating India,” the diplomat was also quoted.Sabihuddin, foreign affairs advisor to Khaleda Zia, told The Indian Express that India is not a factor here this time.“We should not be bothered whether BJP or Congress is in power in Delhi. Similarly, the Indian government should not bother whether Awami League or the BNP wins the elections,” the BNP leader told the Indian media. The report says, “The BNP, which has traditionally led the charge against India in previous elections, nuanced its position, having burnt its fingers in 2014. As the BNP had boycotted the elections, Delhi did not push the Hasina-led Bangladesh government to hold re-elections — rather, it endorsed Hasina’s victory. That was a huge setback, which many within the BNP felt was a ‘blunder’”.According to The Indian Express, India worked on the Bangladesh relationship quite seriously over the last few years, suggests some of the increased interaction at the highest level.“There were 10 meetings between prime minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina, six video conferences and five telephone calls in the last five years — 19 development projects were inaugurated jointly by the two leaders, and they signed over 90 bilateral agreements in new areas like space, IT, electronics, cybersecurity, civil nuclear energy among others,” the report added. It adds that India’s development assistance to Bangladesh increased from $3 billion to $8 billion in three years. Bilateral trade has increased by 31.5 per cent from $7 billion to $9.3 billion.Ashikur Rahman, a senior economist at the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh, told The Indian Express: “I think Sheikh Hasina has navigated the geopolitical terrain quite skilfully. And, Awami League has a win-win partnership with all international stakeholders.”last_img read more

White House again hit with staff upheavals

first_imgUS president Donald Trump speaks to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly after an event with reporters in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, US on 10 October. Photo: ReutersAnother round of upheaval engulfed president Donald Trump’s White House on Tuesday, with the future of several senior aides in doubt just a week after U.S. congressional elections.Three Trump cabinet members – chief of staff John Kelly, homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and interior secretary Ryan Zinke – could soon be gone, said sources familiar with internal discussions in the Republican administration.Turnover among White House personnel paused during the run-up to last week’s elections after senior Republicans asked Trump to refrain from firing staff, hoping to minimize perceptions of disorder.Attorney general Jeff Sessions was forced out by Trump last week just hours after the results came in from the 6 November elections, which handed majority control of the House of Representatives to Democrats.Trump’s first 22 months in office have seen frequent shakeups. A study this year by the Brookings Institution, a think tank, found Trump’s White House has had the highest turnover of senior-level staff of the past five presidents. In an unusual move, sources said, Trump was also ready to dismiss Mira Ricardel, deputy national security advisor, at the request of his wife, Melania Trump, after a clash between the two over the first lady’s recent trip to Africa.Melania Trump’s office acknowledged the acrimony.Trump was expected to remove Nielsen, a source close to the White House said. Nielsen took the job after Trump made Kelly his chief of staff. But now the president is considering getting rid of both them, the source said.Zinke has been under investigation for several ethics controversies including travel and a business deal in his home state of Montana, casting doubt on how long he would remain at the helm of the agency.A final decision on his future could be postponed beyond this week. He is scheduled to travel to California on Wednesday and Thursday to visit communities hit by deadly wildfires, the Interior Department said on Tuesday.Trump last week said Zinke was doing an “excellent job” but left open the possibility of replacing him. “We’re looking at that, and I do want to study whatever is being said,” Trump told reporters last week.Adding to the sense of upheaval at the White House, Special Counsel Robert Mueller was planning to file more indictments in his 18-month investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign, sources said.last_img read more

Sri Lanka churches hotels bomb attacks toll rise to 138

Photo: ReutersEaster Day bomb blasts at three Sri Lankan churches and three luxury hotels killed 138 people and wounded more than 400, hospital and police officials said, following a lull in major attacks since the end of the civil war 10 years ago.In just one church, St. Sebastian’s in Katuwapitiya, north of Colombo, more than 50 people had been killed, a police official told Reuters, with pictures showing bodies on the ground, blood on the pews and a destroyed roof.Media reported 25 people were also killed in an attack on a church in Batticaloa in Eastern Province. The three hotels hit were the Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel and Cinnamon Grand Colombo. It was unclear whether there were any casualties in the hotels.Nine foreigners were among the dead, the officials said. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks in a country which was at war for decades with Tamil separatists until 2009 during which bomb blasts in the capital were common.Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called a national security council meeting at his home for later in the day.One of the explosions was at St Anthony’s Church in Kochcikade, Colombo.”Our people are engaged in evacuating the casualties,” a source with the bomb squad said.St. Sebastian’s church posted pictures of destruction inside the church on its Facebook page, showing blood on pews and the floor, and requested help from the public.Sri Lankan military officials stand guard in front of the St. Anthony`s Shrine, Kochchikade church after an explosion in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 21 April 2019. I dont respect convention in music religion

first_imgTalking about the unifying power of music, Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan recently said that he doesn’t respect convention in music or in religion and lamented the state of the 21st century world, driven by religious strife. “I don’t respect convention. It is a very unhealthy word. Even regarding religion, my father often told me all of us have a common God. In this 21st century, we are still fighting and killing each other on account of religion,” Khan said here at a literary meet. The master of strings regretted that education has failed to instil compassion and kindness in human beings. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”How can a (person holding a degree like) PhD be radical or communal? This is the problem of the whole world, not only in India,” he pointed out. Expressing gratitude to the Almighty for the unifying power of music, Khan said, “I think the 21st century is the worst time for the world, which should have been the best time. People are afraid to travel internationally, there is a problem of security. Thank God that music has connected the world whereas language creates barriers.” Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveAccording to the Padma Vibhushan awardee, this message of common God and race should have been given by every priest but they don’t talk as ‘they are paid servants’. “At this age, I want to give my opinion and share my thoughts with the people,” he said. About presentation and breaking convention, the legend said, “Presentation is a different art. Grammar and literature are important for everybody to learn but very few musicians realise the level of poetry. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was an amazing combination of a poet and musician. He took liberty in every Raga and I think only a genius can do that and the rest follow the convention”. As a young boy, he said, he did not like Rabindra Sangeet but later liked it due to Suchitra Mitra, one of the finest exponents of Rabindra Sangeet.last_img read more
