HOW COULD IT HAPPEN AGAIN? CAMPAIGNERS DEMAND FULL PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO FLOOD

first_imgSO how could it happen again?Staff, patients and the communities of Co Donegal were told a year ago after the last flood that it was a “once in 50 years” event. But today as the clear-up continues at Letterkenny General Hospital after yet another flood – albeit a much less serious one – people are again looking for answers. Veteran campaigner Betty Holmes from Donegal Action for Cancer Care wants a public inquiry – just like local politicians.“We have already contacted Minister for Health Leo Varadkar TD and Mr Tony O’ Brien Director General HSE regarding this matter,” said Ms Holmes.“We are calling on our Donegal elected representatives to support us in this call and to ensure that this very urgent matter is addressed this time.“It is not enough to say that today’s flooding wasn’t a fault of the culvert , the fact that the hospital’s new A& E building has been flooded twice in just over the year, serious questions must be answered regarding this building.” The passionate campaigner went on: “We in Donegal Action for Cancer Care have been working in a totally voluntary capacity for 9 years now for the good of Donegal cancer patients and Letterkenny General Hospital.“We must again remember the major impact that this flood once again has on firstly patients , their families and not to be forgotten the great staff at LGH.“At a time when we in DACC are very concerned regarding budget cuts, recruitment embargo, we now have this terrible situation again.“It must be sorted once and for all and all our questions answered.” HOW COULD IT HAPPEN AGAIN?
