ERC commissioners meet with Opposition Leader

first_img– Concerns raised again on GECOM racial bias complaintNewly-elected Commissioners of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) on Wednesday met with Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo to discuss matters related to complaints of racial bias at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), among other issues that fall within their ambit.Jagdeo was accompanied by Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Parliamentarian Bishop Juan Edghill, who engaged the commissioners in frank and open discussions on race relations and matters impacting ethnic insecurities in Guyana.Discussions included adhering to the objectives of fairness and transparency, but specific reference was also made to the hiring of staffers at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), and the PPP’s concerns relative to the need for fair and transparent hiring practices based on merit.GECOM Commissioners Bibi Shadick, Sase Gunraj and Robeson Benn had written a letter of complaint to the ERC, contending there is a manifest ethnic imbalance at GECOM, and that hiring practices are being manipulated in favour of one group. The letter had asked for the ERC to investigate.Asked for an update on this matter, Bishop Dr John Smith said investigations have not yet commenced, owing to financial and staffing challenges. According to Smith, the commission has “to get staff. We advertised for staff, and are working to get the machine in place so we can do the work.”But during the meeting, Jagdeo also reminded the Commissioners that the Constitution empowers them to conduct investigations on their own accord. The Commission was encouraged to examine the studies done by previous ERC in theOpposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo (centre) flanked by Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira (left), Former ERC Chairman and Opposition MP, Juan Edghill, and ERC commissioners during the meeting on Wednesdaypublic service, contracts and procurement, and the allocation of house lots.According to a statement from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, Jagdeo stressed that the State has a responsibility to give fair and equal treatment to its citizens, and to ensure equal access to goods and services. The Opposition Leader also encouraged the ERC to engage in a fact-based approach in adhering to their mandate, and to address issues before them in an expeditious manner. The Opposition also made it clear that they do not support the introduction of a quota system. Jagdeo reaffirmed that the PPP stands by the principle of meritocracy as key to employment in the State (public) and private sectors, as well as to opportunities for scholarships. He also repeated the PPP’s call for equal treatment for the more than 7,000 sugar workers who have lost their jobs as a result of the closures of the Wales, Rose Hall, Skeldon and Enmore sugar estates. Jagdeo outlined policies that were implemented to support communities in Region 10, specifically Linden and communities along the Berbice River, because of problems relating to the bauxite sector. Those policies and subsidies remain intact today in those areas. He therefore urged the Commission to look at what needs to be done to ensure that the sugar workers benefit from equal treatment.Concerns were also raised about the almost 2,000 Amerindian Community Service Officers (CSOs) whose services were terminated post May 2015. The Opposition Leader informed the Commissioners that with the loss of employment of these CSOs, over $700 million has been withdrawn from their communities, resulting in devastating repercussions for the people living in those areas.Much of the discussion saw time given to the concerns about the state and welfare of Afro-Guyanese, and the ERC was requested to do a fact-based study on the periods 1964-1992 (under the PNC administration), 1992-2015 (under the PPP/C administration) and 2015 to present (under the APNU+AFC Coalition Government); and facilitate a public discussion on the findings. The Leader of the Opposition stated that if this study was done, it would find that Afro-Guyanese did better under successive PPP/C Governments.ERC Chairman Dr Smith has said that since resuscitation of this commission, the ERC has been flooded with requests. Some of the main issues that engaged the Commission’s attention were the allegations of discrimination at Mae’s School, and claims of ethnic imbalance at the GECOM.The Chairman also informed that the Commission is currently refining its work plan, looking at its legal framework, and recruiting to bring its staff complement to working strength.Retired Major General Norman McLean, who is a member of the Commission, has said that despite the challenges, the Commissioners are committed to working as a team to ensure that social cohesion is truly realised. This, he said, is the main objective of the work programme that is being drafted.Similar sentiments were also expressed by the other Commissioners.last_img read more

Zuma urges Canada to invest in SA

first_img22 May 2013South Africa offers good investment prospects for countries like Canada, President Jacob Zuma said in Cape Town on Tuesday during the state visit of Canadian Governor-General David Johnston.Zuma said he hoped that Canada would take advantage of infrastructure projects on the continent, as well as get more involved in Africa’s mining sector. And as South Africa prepares to launch the South African Development Agency, Zuma said the agency could benefit from support of the Canadian International Development Agency, adding that countries from the North and the South had the unique opportunity to work together to change the lives of millions of Africans.Zuma said relations between South Africa and Canada were friendly and co-operative, rooted as they were in the anti-apartheid struggle, when Canada had argued strongly for a non-sexist, non-racist society. The two countries had also worked closely in multi-lateral associations, including the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, which investigates serious transgressions of human rightsJohnston said he and Zuma held discussions on a number of issues, including the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope. He congratulated South Africa for winning the bid to co-host the SKA.“Here you have succeeded in bringing the best talent into this country, the collaboration of many nations, for a very ambitious project of seeing further into space than we have ever seen before, and this from South Africa,” Johnston said.“Inspired by this major project, President Zuma and I also discussed the prospects of closer ties between Canada and South Africa in science, technology and education.”Johnston said the success of the Canadian-designed Gautrain demonstrated both the quality of South African infrastructure and the strength and expertise of Canadian technology. There were several areas in which South Africa and Canada could co-operate, including mining, infrastructure, agriculture and education, he said, adding that the success of Africa was critical to the success of the world.“This remarkable experiment of bringing diversity together and reinforcing democracy that we have seen in South Africa from last 19 years is inspiring all of us … and we will be with you all the way as you bring the African continent together to extend those values and achievements that you have already demonstrated so well here,” he said.Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

BlackBerry Z10 Finally To Start Shipping In The United States

first_imgWhy IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Tags:#BlackBerry#Carriers Related Posts What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … dan rowinskicenter_img Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement BlackBerry’s newest smartphone is finally coming to the United States. According to a press release from wireless carrier AT&T, the BlackBerry Z10 will be available to consumers in its store on March 22. Pre-orders for the Z10 will start tomorrow, Tuesday March 12. The BlackBerry Z10 will be available for $199 with a two-year contract. The timing of the release aligns with what the company said during the BlackBerry 10 launch event at the end of January. The first wave of BlackBerry Z10 first hit consumers in the United Kingdom, Canada and United Arab Emirates the week after BlackBerry announced the devices. BlackBerry said that U.S. consumers would see the BlackBerry Z10 “in March.”It is nice to see BlackBerry (the company formerly known as Research In Motion) actually hold to its promises these days. The BlackBerry 10 devices were already pushed back from the company’s original launch dates three times in 2012 before settling on Jan. 30, 2013. Due to complicated review processes that the U.S. carriers impose on new smartphones (which complicates coordinating a single release date on multiple carriers), the U.S. was not part of the first wave of countries to get the Z10. But, BlackBerry said March and it has actually lived up to its word. At least on AT&T. The Z10 will also be available to U.S. consumers on T-Mobile and Verizon. T-Mobile is expected to ship devices starting this week while Verizon has not verified when it will begin selling the smartphone. Sprint is not expected to carry the device. AT&T said that it will also be serving the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 10 to its enterprise and government clients. Demonstrators stop Edmonton Pride parade over police participation

first_imgEDMONTON – Edmonton’s annual Pride parade ground to a halt for more than half an hour on Saturday, when demonstrators upset that police officers were allowed to march in the event blocked its route. The demonstrators handed out leaflets calling for the parade’s organizers to uninvite city police, RCMP and military members from marching in future parades. The leaflets also demanded the Edmonton Pride Festival Society “restructure its board and staff hiring practices to have more representation from people of colour and trans folks.”The society, the city’s police and the RCMP announced last month that officers would take part in Saturday’s parade along Whyte Ave., but would wear T-shirts instead of their uniforms. One protester held a sign that said “Racism is a Queer Issue,” but some spectators grew impatient with the demonstration and chanted “We want Pride!”Alexis Hillyard, a spokeswoman for the protesters, says the parade resumed after Pride organizers agreed to their demands.“Yes, people were grumpy that the parade was stopped and I understand that. But the parade got to continue and it was a beautiful parade,” said Hillyard, who was participating in the parade as a marshal and then stopped to be in the protest.“The Pride society listened and accepted and pledged to meet all of the requests, which is a really huge win for everyone because that just means safer participation for all people, not just a certain type of people,” she added. The society said in a statement late Saturday afternoon that it agreed with the demands, and that police and military members would not march in the parade “until the community feels that they have taken the necessary steps for all community members to feel safe with their presence.”The decision to allow police officers to march, but not in uniform, followed meetings between the society, city police and RCMP that were initiated after police vehicles were restricted from participating in the 2017 parade. The society explained at the time that in many communities, police enforcement agencies were seen to make marginalized people feel unsafe.A news release on behalf of the protesters said that people of colour were invited to be parade marshals, but that when those marshals raised concerns about police participation in the parade, their concerns were repeatedly ignored.“The Edmonton Pride Festival Society views people of colour as decorations, to be seen and not heard,” the release stated. The demonstrators included in their demands that “mainstream Pride spaces clearly acknowledge and honour Pride’s history as a demonstration against police oppression,” and that “more well-funded spaces specifically designed for people of colour and trans folks be included in the festival.”The news release says all of the demands were met.Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and members of her NDP caucus marched in the parade. The premier posted numerous photos and video from the event on Twitter and Facebook, but did not mention the delay. The Edmonton Pride Festival Society said its board will hold community meetings to decide how to move forward with the demonstrators’ demands, and how to support communities suffering from systemic racism and oppression.last_img read more

But the superstar asked him to go for revenue sharing with Ashwini Dutt and Prasad V Potluri, due to his prior commitments with them. However, the upset producer is believed to have said he had no control over the pre-release business. He also apparently had a fight with Ashwini Dutt over revenue sharing. It is said that Mahesh Babu consoled Dil Raju, saying that he would do another movie under his banner Sri Venkateswara Creations. On the other hand, the producer had signed a film with Anil Ravipudi, and Prince agreed to be part of this project after the director narrated him an interesting script. But the twist is that the actor asked him to make a joint production with Anil Sunkara.Initially, Dil Raju reportedly agreed to be part of Mahesh 26. But the latest we hear is that the producer has now opted out of this project and Anil Sunkara is ready to bankroll it single-handedly. It should be seen whether the superstar would come forward to do another movie with Sri Venkateswara Creations. Dil Raju with Mahesh BabuCollage of photos taken from Twitter and FacebookIt is said that Anil Ravipudi has given Rs 50 crore is estimated cost of the production of Mahesh 26. This amount does not include Mahesh Babu’s remuneration and he is said to be getting its non-theatrical rights as his salary. It is known that satellite, audio, digital and other non-theatrical rights of the film could fetch nothing less than Rs 50 crore, which is now going to be his payment. The theatrical rights of Mahesh Babu’s recent releases have fetched over Rs 100 crore for the producer. Mahesh 26 may fetch even more than this amount since F2 fame director Anil Ravipudi is directing it. Even if it earns Rs 100 crore, producer Anil Sunkara will get Rs 50 crore as his profit share from this project. It is 100 percent earnings for the budget that he is set to invest in this film.last_img read more

Joint forum urges CEO to ensure adequate security for polling personnel

first_imgKolkata: A joint forum of state and Central government employees, public sector employees, teachers and non-teaching staff has written to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ariz Aftab on Wednesday, urging him to make adequate security arrangements for polling personnel on the days of election. The forum, under the banner of ‘United Movement of Workers, Employees and Teachers’, requested the CEO to ensure a proper atmosphere in and around the polling stations, so that polling personnel and officials may discharge their duties without the fear of being intimidated. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataIn their letter, some of the government employees told the CEO that in a few previous incidents, the polling personnel were threatened. They urged the Election Commission to ensure that no polling persons feel frightened while performing their duties on the days of poll. The forum also raised another issue with the Election Commission. They said that the polling officials are supposed to exercise their franchise either by Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system or through postal ballot, which they get well in advance to the date of poll. However, during the last Parliamentary polls in 2014, the Assembly polls in 2016 and also in the Panchayat polls in 2018, most of the officials received their ballots either immediately before the elections or after the date of election. Some others did not receive the ballots at all. As a result, a section of the election officials could not cast their votes in previous elections, the letter says. The letter also points out that the forum members came to know from the postal department that the ballots were delivered to the addressees immediately after the postal department received them. The members of the forum urged the CEO to ensure that there is no recurrence of such incidents in the Lok Sabha polls.last_img read more
