Mandela Day 2014: it’s in our hands now

first_imgThe 2014 Nelson Mandela Day International Day campaign was officially launched in Johannesburg in April . Celebrated across the globe in honour of the late statesman’s birthday on 18 July, the day gives everyone the opportunity to emulate Mandela’s role as public servant. “Mandela Day is not only about doing good, it is about service,” Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang said at the launch event. “It is an opportunity to build upon Mr Mandela’s lifelong belief that we must live to serve every day, in whatever we do.” This year’s Mandela Day will be particularly symbolic in that it offers South Africans, and the world, an occasion to honour the ethos of the late Mr Mandela in the year that marks South Africa’s 20th year of democracy. Professor Njabulo Ndebele, the foundation’s chairperson, said South Africa should use the event to “position itself as a shining example of what can happen when people come together to address social injustices and do good”. Mandela Day, the foundation said in a statement, creates an opportunity for society’s “haves” and “have nots” to work together to confront social ills within their communities and to build a better world. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, also speaking at the launch event, said: “Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years of his life. It is not too much to ask that we devote 67 minutes of each day in each year to honour his lifelong legacy. This is a day that inspires all of humanity and reminds us of our public service to each other.” Mandela’s passing away in December was “all the more reason we have to up the ante, ensuring that this day is imbued with durable meaning that reverberates across time and space,” Motlanthe said. “In 2014, let us all support the Nelson Mandela International Day campaign, mindful of both the global contexts and the contexts of our own communities. This is not only about doing good; it is about building the cultures that will make a difference in the world.” The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008, when he said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.” The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s “values and his dedication to the service of humanity” and acknowledging his contribution “to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world”. The Mandela Day campaign asks that individuals, groups and corporates pledge 67 minutes of their time on 18 July, and every day thereafter, to give back. This can be by supporting a charity or serving the community. No matter how small the action, the aim is to change the world for the better – just as Mandela did. SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

The Real Reason AT&T And Verizon Are Pushing New “Shared” Data Plans

first_imgA new iPhone this year may mean a new “shared data” wireless plan for you, too. They may or may not save you money – that’s not the point. They’re really designed to put the wireless carriers in a better financial position for the future.Get Ready To ShareWith Apple’s new iPhone expected to launch in mid-September, expect to hear a lot of noise about newish, “shared” service plans from Verizon Wireless and AT&T, the biggest U.S. wireless carriers. The big idea: Instead of having separate pools of data allowances between different devices – an iPhone and iPad, for example – all of your family’s devices draw from the same pool.Verizon already requires these plans for new subscribers, and AT&T says it will require them for subscribers who want to use Apple’s FaceTime video chat service over the mobile internet. (Translation: Eventually, you’ll end up using one whether you want to or not.)Here’s how it works: For each device, you pay a monthly “access” fee. At Verizon Wireless, for example, this ranges from $40 per month for smartphones to $10 per month for tablets. This provides unlimited talking and texting on phones – no more minutes to keep track of. Then, you choose a monthly bucket of data that all your devices use, ranging from $50 per month for 1 GB to $100 per month for 10 GB.The pitch to the consumer is that these plans are smarter for today’s families, which often have multiple smartphones and tablets. If you’re not using all the iPhone data you’re paying for, why not be allowed to use it on your iPad?The Business MotivePerhaps this pricing realignment makes some sense for subscribers. But it really makes sense for the carriers.Consider how much more time you spend using a smartphone’s data signal versus making voice calls. Since I started using an iPhone in 2008, my data usage far has far outpaced my voice usage. Last month, I used 70 voice minutes, but probably spent over 50 hours using data. (Meanwhile, I’ve accumulated 3,900 “rollover” minutes on AT&T – a near-worthless benefit that made much more sense a decade ago.)But while our smartphone data usage could now be 10 to 20 times our voice usage (if not more!), the amount of money we spend on voice is still usually half or more of our monthly bills. Below, I’ve charted the last 10 years’ worth of Verizon’s voice and data service revenues. Overall service revenue has more than tripled, but data is still only about 44% of Verizon Wireless’s service revenue. But what they really do is insulate carriers from potential disruption to outdated service models, and provide a more stable, logical revenue model for current and future wireless usage.Phone and tablet photo via Shutterstock.last_img read more

Police disrupt climate protest in Mumbai, with a warning note on Aarey

first_imgBarely 20 minutes after protesters gathered at Bandra Reclamation on Sunday morning, demanding that the government declare a climate emergency, the police dispersed them. Many claimed that the police warned them that they could not to talk about the Aarey issue. Organised by a volunteer-led group called Extinction Rebellion (XR), the agitators, including schoolchildren and college students, planned a mock die-in. Following the disruption, they shifted their venue to a nearby parking lot.XR has been in the news for its protests across the world. Last week, the group gathered in London spilling red paint to resemble blood, and raised a sign that read ‘stop funding climate death’.In Mumbai, the group planned a more subtle protest with participants lying down as dead. “Policemen were already present before we reached the venue. We showed them our permission letters but they said no gathering would be allowed as Section 144 was in force,” an XR volunteer told The Hindu, adding the policemen also told them that they could not talk about or discuss the Aarey issue. “We had a few students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences who had come down to talk about Aarey but they had to go back due to the police diktat,” he said. The group had initially planned to march to Aarey colony following the Bandra protest. But they had to cancel it in view of the police action against the protesters who assembled at Aarey. “We did not want to risk the safety of the people,” the volunteer said.He also said they will approach the Mayor to demand a declaration of climate crisis in Mumbai. The group has planned similar events in other cities.A press statement from XR said they are a group standing up for Indian assets that matter to all Indians first, and specifically Mumbaikars – forests, rivers, wetlands, oceans, humans, and animals. “It’s quite shocking to see authorities intervene and be present widely for a planned event on climate change.”last_img read more

Pakistan to host T20 Asia cup 2020 in neutral venue

first_imgThe next edition of the Asia Cup could also be UAE-bound with Pakistan given the hosting rights of the tournament in 2020, as organising it in its own country will cast serious doubts on India’s participation owing to diplomatic tensions. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in its meeting in Singapore on Tuesday awarded the continental meet, to be held in T20 format, to Pakistan, which will most likely organise it in the neutral venues of the United Arab Emirates, its cricket team’s ‘home’ since the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus.The tournament will be held in September ahead of the World T20 in Australia.Diplomatic tensions with neighbours Pakistan forced India to host the last Asia Cup in the UAE.”Pakistan told the delegates at the ACC meeting held in Singapore that they would host the Asia Cup at home but a final decision on the venue would be taken after consultation with other members of the ACC and keeping in mind the prevailing security and political situation around that time in Pakistan,” a PCB source said.He said if conditions were not conducive to have the Asia Cup in Pakistan, the PCB would host it at a neutral venue.”Last year the Board of Control for Cricket in India hosted the Asia Cup in UAE because of the political tensions between Pakistan and India,” the source added. When contacted, a senior BCCI official told PTI: “The decision to play in pakistan will be completely be the government’s call. The Board will follow whatever decision the centre takes. We believe that just like we hosted the tournament last year in the UAE, Pakistan should also ideally organise it at a neutral venue.”advertisementAt the ACC meeting, the PCB representatives also insisted that Sri Lanka send its team to Pakistan to play the two ICC Test Championship matches in Lahore and Karachi in September this year.It was also decided that the sport would return to the next Asian Games in T20 format and the ACC would provide technical support to the Olympic Council of Asia. Also Read | World Cup 2019 Opening Ceremony Live Streaming: When and where to watchAlso Watch:last_img read more
