Nintendo is considering getting back into virtual reality but dont exp

first_imgVirtual reality (or VR as the cool kids call it) is all the rage these days with several companies, most notably Sony and Oculus VR, coming out with their own VR headsets in the immediate future. However, these projects are all walking in the footsteps of Nintendo, who had their own VR headset in the mid ’90s. Though the Virtual Boy was an abysmal failure, it seems that Nintendo may try its hand at VR once again.Current Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said in a recent earnings call that VR is an “interesting technology.” According to the Financial Times, Nintendo is currently looking into researching VR but that it has no concrete plans to release anything in the near future. This is interesting considering how Nintendo has all but dismissed VR during the last few years. Both Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime and creator Shigeru Miyamoto have been publicly skeptical of VR, with the former telling Polygon that VR isn’t fun and is “just tech,” and the latter telling NPR that he feels the technology wasn’t a “good fit” for the philosophy of Nintendo.Considering how Nintendo may release its new console this year, its unlikely that we’ll see this new VR initiative see the light of day for some time. If things aren’t even in the planning stages, then it remains to be seen how the technology will work with the NX, which is rumored to be both a console and a handheld.Though we may not see a Nintendo VR device for some time, the prospect of the company jumping on board the VR train seem promising considering the vast wealth of first party Nintendo titles. Franchises like Mario Kart and Star Fox practically beg to have VR games. Hopefully, the company will shed more light on this when it officially announces their next console sometime this year.last_img
