Crews close to the finish

first_imgPALMDALE – Delayed by storms, supply shortages during a construction boom and work crews busied elsewhere by storm damage, Avenue S’s widening is nearing completion. The last work for the street’s second bridge over the Union Pacific railroad tracks is expected to be finished in January, bringing the street to a full four lanes between the Antelope Valley Freeway and 25th Street East. “Barring ridiculous weather like we had last year, we hope to wrap this up very soon,” Palmdale Public Works Director Leon Swain said Wednesday. The $25 million project started in October 2003 and was expected to be finished by last spring, then in fall. One factor in the delay was difficulty in finding workers to move utility lines because they were busy repairing winter storm damage. On the west side of the Antelope Valley Freeway, work is continuing on widening and extending Avenue S into the 5,000-home Anaverde master-planned community. That work is being done by the developer. Of the $25 million project budget, $19 million was for the actual construction contract and the rest was for buying right of way, designing the project, and managing the work. While motorists will be able to use all four lanes in January, landscaping work will continue. The last landscaping is expected to be planted in April. Besides widening the street, the project included installing new traffic signals and upgrading others, adding a bike path, realigning the intersection with 20th Street East, and installing new warning lights and crossing gates at the Metrolink train crossing near Sierra Highway. The project also involved installing curbs and gutters, drainage channels, landscaping and, for bus riders, turnouts, benches and shelters. last_img
