Drake won a back-and-forth game against Saint Mary’s by a score of 11-10 before dropping a close 5-3 contest to UNLV. Junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) lifted a double to left field in the seventh inning that drove in sophomore Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) for the game-winning run against the Gaels as the Bulldogs came back to win a wild one as the teams each slugged 13 hits in a game that each team led by several runs at certain points. Saint Mary’s, the visitors, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning as the Gaels put up four runs in the opening frame to chase Drake starting pitcher Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) from the game without recording an out. Saint Mary’s scored two runs in the second inning off relief pitcher Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa). Sophomore Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) cut the 6-0 deficit in half with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second. Smith, who had stayed in the game as the DP after being pulled from the circle, pulled Drake to within one run with her first career home run, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Smith tied the contest at 6-6 the next inning with an RBI double and one batter later the Bulldogs claimed their first lead as freshman Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) raced home to score on a wild pitch. Alexander then came up with another big hit as the sophomore outfielder ripped a run-scoring double to put Drake up 8-6 after five innings. Drake added a pair of runs in the sixth to go up 10-6. One of the runs came courtesy of freshman Kennedy Frank’s (Chesterfield, Mo.) team-leading fourth home run, a solo blast. Saint Mary’s tied the game with three runs in the top of the seventh inning before Sowa’s walk-off. Drake sophomore pitcher Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) earned her sixth win of the season. Newman pitched five innings and allowed four runs (all unearned) on six hits with five strikeouts. Pena and Smith each had three hits while Alexander and Sowa each had two. UNLV scored two runs off Newman in the first inning as the Rebels had a solo home run and a RBI double. In the fourth inning, Alexander ripped a RBI double to pull Drake within one run at 2-1 and two batters later, Wright, drove in two runs with a RBI single to take a 3-2 lead. The Rebels rallied for the win with three runs in the sixth inning as they capitalized on a defensive miscue by Alexander for the two deciding runs. Newman earned her second loss of the season as she allowed five runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Smith led the offense with two hits. Drake closes the UNLV Classic with a single game on Sunday morning. The Bulldogs will play Florida Atlantic at 11 a.m. CST. Print Friendly Version Full Schedule Roster last_img read more
