GEORGE, Utah-Dixie State football commences its fall camp Monday seeking to improve from a 5-6 campaign in 2017.The five wins the Trailblazers amassed in 2017 represents the second-most wins in a season Dixie State has had since moving to Division II.Dixie State returns 12 starters from last season, including eight on defense. Of the four returning offensive starters for the Trailblazers, two are on the offensive line. These include preseason all-Rocky Mountain Conference lineman Tevia Tolutau of Provo’s Timpview High.Dixie State also returns their 2017 rushing and receiving leaders in junior tailback Sei-J Lauago and redshirt junior receiver Kasey Allison.Despite playing in only eight games last season, Lauago rushed for 803 yards and five touchdowns, setting a school-record 100.4 rushing yards per game in 2017.Lauago also hauled in 14 passes for 110 yards and another score while he led the Trailblazers with 971 all-purpose yards.Allison started in all 11 games at receiver for the Trailblazers in 2017, posting 39 receptions for a team-high 580 yards and four scores.The strength of the Dixie State squad is on defense, including last year’s tackling leader, safety Mike Jones and last year’s leader in interceptions, senior safety Trayvon Watson. Additionally, last season’s sacks leader, defensive lineman Remington Kelly, returns.Junior kicker A.J. Yergensen, who made 7 of his 8 field goals last season, returns, as does senior kicker Anthony Reyes, who posted 27 touchbacks in 53 kickoffs for the Trailblazers.Head coach Shay McClure is back for his third season on the Dixie State sidelines and will have a pair of new coordinators in offensive coordinator Blake Rolan and defensive coordinator Willie Mack Garza.Garza has been promoted from secondary coach while last season, the Trailblazers’ secondary surrendered only 168.2 passing yards per game, a new school record.Rolan comes to St. George after previously serving as an offensive analyst at Kentucky.Five other assistants also return to the Dixie State squad from last season, including offensive line coach Keola Loo, receivers coach Anthony Weeden, defensive line coach Dustin Sobleraj, defensive backs coach Marcus Graves and assistant coach Benson Laumatia.Three new coaches are joining the staff for 2018, including tight ends coach Famika Anae, running backs coach Carl Franke and linebackers coach Junior Tanuvasa.
